Wax on, wax off? So you've chosen your Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® colour, now do you need Chalk Paint® Wax? Yes, wax seals and protect furniture and walls. Annie Sloan herself wax more or less everything she paints. She says it makes her projects strong and practical, and gives them a beautiful, workable finish.
Chalk Paint® Wax emphasises depth of colour and gives a beautiful mellow finish, or can be buffed to a high sheen. It is water-repellent too, so can be used on dining room tables and kitchen cabinets.
Few tips on how to use the wax:
Less is more. There's no need to apply wax too thickly.
Work small areas at a time. This way, the wax doesn't dry before you get to work it in.
"Push" the wax into your Chalk Paint® for the best results.
Allow around 24 hours before buffing. Leave the wax to dry before you buff to achieve a really good shine.
The Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® Wax comes in Clear, White, Black, and Dark. To achieve Annie's signature look, first apply a thin coat of clear Chalk Paint® Wax, removing any excess with a clean cloth.
Use Dark or Black Wax to enrich the Chalk Paint® colour and bring out texture to your paintwork. First apply a thin coat of Clear Wax, removing any excess with a clean cloth. Next, apply the Dark Wax , pushing it into the paintwork to bring our brush marks and recesses.
Use White Chalk Paint® Wax to soften and lighten Chalk Paint® colours. It can also be applied directly onto unvarnished wood to create a limed look.
For surfaces that will see a lot of wear such as floors and stairs, use Chalk Paint® Lacquer instead. This is a robust, matt varnish that dries clear. This has ha very slight sheen for added strength.
Although you can use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® outdoors, Chalk Paint® Wax is not suitable for outdoor use. On garden furniture, a coat of water-based exterior varnish will protect against stains and keep the finish looking good for longer.
